If only my Standard were as well-behaved, quiet, and restrained as are Barbra (named for Streisand?) and her brother Brutus. The author took me for a trip down "memory lane" of like 2,000 years on how people have used mathematics, in this instance - number theory, throughout the ages from the European to the Hindu civilizations. I also would have liked to see more development of the alternative world of 1965, other than just a couple of tantalizing glimpses.
Still, I had fun reading the story, despite its significant drawbacks. A break in the upward trend thus produces profound disorientation and disillusionment" (@11-12). The modern Ms. enjoyable and thought provoking.. Yes, it is overdone, but to such a degree that it just becomes a form you do not mind happening over and over, as the fights and imprisonments are also linked to character development and politics and humor.
